More About Lagunya Rugby Football Club
How We Got Here
The Club was established in 1992 and was serving three different townships in Cape Town, namely Langa, Gugulethu and Nyanga. The club is the product of amalgamation of 23 clubs from the above-mentioned townships, deriving its name from them hence the name Lagunya. Lagunya is an affiliate of the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) which in turn is an affiliate of South African Rugby Football Union (SARU).
Unification was the first revolution for SARFU, whilst the second was the swift onset of professionalism in the wake of Rugby World Cup 1995. Enhanced commercialism and the need to run rugby as business has provided the third and latest revolution.
After the unification process it was then suggested that local teams from the townships should follow suit in order to be able to meet the strength of their counterparts from the former SARB in provincial club competition. This then led to the amalgamation of 14 clubs from the three Cape Peninsula townships to form Lagunya.
After the merger of these clubs, it was decided Nyanga Stadium would be home of the new club. Even today, Lagunya continues to use Nyanga as its home ground.
